Snowball Mountain

Snowball Mountain was purchased with the help of money received
via an Appalachia Rising connection.

Snowball Mountain Phase II Tract is a 64-acre property located within the Reems Creek Bowl Preserve and adjacent to Snowball Mountain Preserve and the Woodfin Watershed. This acquisition is vital to bridge the gap in unprotected land in this biologically significant region. The property is part of the Black and Great Craggy Mountains Important Bird Area, an identified priority Forest Matrix Block, and a priority wildlife corridor identified by the Wildlands Network. The Snowball Mountain Phase II Tract contributes to the conservation landscape by expanding protected lands within a critical ecological region. It serves as an essential link for wildlife movement and adds to the resilience of the ecosystem in facing climate change.

Additionally, three streams cross the property, enhancing its role in protecting water resources and ensuring ongoing carbon sequestration. One of these streams is a designated headwater of Reems Creek, an important trout stream, highlighting the tract’s value for water quality conservation and aquatic habitat protection. The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy was able to purchase this property, marking a significant victory for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, as well as carbon storage and ecosystem health.
