Missing Philanthropy/Place-Based Philanthropy
Central Appalachia receives 1/8 of the philanthropic dollars per capita compared to the rest of the nation, with $40/person compared to the Bay Area’s $2k/person. Amidst the largest transfer in wealth in human history, Appalachia is getting left behind because the majority of folks who would normally give philanthropically are instead leaving funds to be managed outside of the region (Fidelity, etc.). Appalachia Funders Network has designed a project to bring on a set of new community foundations in the most impoverished counties in 6 lacking states, providing each organization with a certification by the council of foundations and the start of an endowment.
